Advent Daybook

FOR TODAY... as Advent begins...

Outside my window...
Lots of wood has found its way to the front porch over the past week.  Thanks to my parents for sharing their downed trees, and to Tim and the older kids for getting it stacked.
I am thankful for... so very much... food and clothes and shelter and the rhythm of the Church Year.
I am praying for... for peace to prevail in my home
From the kitchen...We are in the throes of Thanksgiving leftovers.  I hate the movie "A Christmas Story" because every character in it is just so darned obnoxious, but I do hear the Litany of  Turkey in the back of my mind as I try to organize the fridge (or at least prevent things from falling out whenever the door is opened.)  Turkey salad, turkey pot pie, turkey a la King...
I am wearing...a black sweater and a strange skirt that is very attractive but no identifiable color.  It looked plummish  purple when I put it on in my room this morning, and in the van it looked brown.  It matched exactly my new gloves, which according to the tag are "Caffeine Brown."  (I never realized caffeine was a color; here I have been operating under the conclusion that it is a state of mind.)
I am creating... a few simple plans for Advent, tweaking past years' activities for the adjustment in ages and time availability.  I hope we actually do some of it.  :)
I am going...to do some more  crocheting for the mitten tree at the library.  I made the sweetest little  baby pink gloves for that on  Saturday morning... I miss all those little pink things.  When the girls in the  family are 12 and almost 14, the closest I can get is  lots of hot pink, which just isn't the same.
I am reading... I am perusing David Copperfield.  I am not sure if I will actually read the whole thing, especially during Advent, but I am enjoying Betsey Trotwood and the Peggoty clan for now.  "You'll find us rough, sir, but you'll find us ready."  I know the ending so it's fun to meander without suspense.
I am hoping...to keep a steady rhythm of preparation for Advent and avoid the majority of the Christmas crazies.  Our culture is in my face at every turn to try to trick me into celebrating Christmas before Christ arrives.  Our pastor's article in the vicariate newsletter reminded us that as Catholics "we are a liturgical people" and that we have to choose to observe Advent as a time of penance and preparation, even though the stores just want to keep us shopping and throw out the tree the day after Christmas.  I was looked at askance at lunch today when I said we will put the tree up on St. Nicholas Day but we will not light it until Christmas Eve.  We are off TV for Advent so that will help with not seeing any commercials.
I am hearing..."Feliz Navidad" by the Von Trapp Children.
Around the house...
It was such a busy week.  God poured on the grace and must have turned the funnel "upsy-down" as Wilcome says, because there was not a semblance of hoopla, even though I was gone to the parish mission on Divine Mercy four nights in a row, followed by the vigil Mass on Wednesday night for Thanksgiving, and then two days of visiting with relatives (one of which we hosted).  I can only think that God wanted me at that mission because under normal circumstances I would have been a stressed out wreck and my house a disaster.  Amazing.
One of my favorite things... a good confession
A few plans for the rest of the week...The "normal" schedule will become a little busier as we  prepare for Christmas.  This week is a "transitional" week as far as that goes.

Stop over at Peggy's to read other daybooks.
